Alexis Keyes
“Darkness”
Date of Birth: January 3, 2049
Race/Ethnicity: Roma American
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 160lbs.
Hair: black
Eyes: green (wears reading glasses)
The middle sister of five girls, Alexis inherited her father’s
ability to generate heat generating particulate matter that she
calls ‘black heat’. When it became clear that Alexis’s
powers were beyond her father’s scope to teach and her mother’s
patience to clean up after, she was sent to the Academy to learn.
There, she met Laurel and Ian and became the defacto leader of the
trio; driving most of their adventures with her swingshift emotions
and impulsive nature.
Alexis ultimately decided to ‘give back’
to the Academy and become a teacher rather than move to the west
coast with Laurel as Ian did. Over the years, she became distant
and more than a little guilty over the trouble she had caused her
friends in her youth.
This all changed when Alexis discovered the Academy’s
betrayal and bought it to the attention of the only people she knew
she could trust; her old friends. Alexis was initially resistant
to the idea of using her powers for super heroics, but as threats
such as Morganna and Project Tome emerged, she accepted the responsibility
of being tactical leader of the Descendants, even being the one
that finally named the group.
In civilian life, Alexis has become romantically
involved with Ian, and has taken the lead in advancing psionics
rights and founding a school for psionics to fill the void left
by the Academy’s downfall. She now works as a power use and
creativity instructor at the school in Mayfield.
Alexis uses her ‘black heat’ in a number
of ways, including projecting it offensively, levitating herself
and other objects, and starting fires. By carefully arranging the
particulate matter she generates, she can also become invisible,
but doing so makes her blind. She wears a ballistic cloth body suit
in battle as well as a scarf made of transitional material that
allows it to become a rigid staff or elastic rope.

Laurel
Brant
“Codex”
Date of Birth: February 2, 2049
Race/Ethnicity: African American
Height: 5’6”
Weight: 137lbs.
Hair: black
Eyes: brown (wears glasses)
Daughter of Brant Industries owner, William Brant, Laurel grew
up with all the advantages in life except her private tutoring
kept her from socializing properly with kids her age. This changed
when Laurel’s psionic power of hypercognition and eidetic
memory manifested and she was sent to the Academy at Langley.
There, she met Alexis and Ian, forming a tight knit trio with
herself as the voice of reason to Alexis’s impulsiveness.
When
Alexis discovered the Academy’s betrayal, and Ian subsequently
proposed the fated raid on the ‘data retrieval’ center,
Laurel joined them. In the aftermath of the raid, Laurel bought
her friends and the rescued teens to Freeland House, which had
been a private holding of her father, which he then gifted to
her.
After
coming to Freeland House, Laurel has dedicated herself to ensuring
the comfort of it’s inhabitants; from renovating the place,
to developing an astral side communication device for Kareem;
as well as encouraging super heroic action in her fellows.
While
Laurel has no superhuman combat abilities, she is self taught
in more than half a dozen martial arts and has outfitted herself
with a slew of technological weapons including ‘screamer’
sonic warfare devices, a mechanical, expanding staff that separates
into tonfa, and a bodysuit made of bullet resistant ‘ballistic
cloth’. She is also in possession of the Book of Reason,
which contains instructions for ritual magic that she can use.

Ian
Smythe
“Chaos”
Date of Birth: April 21, 2049
Race/Ethnicity: Mixed European American
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 159lbs
Hair: brown
Eyes: brown
A California native, Ian grew up as the brain to his brother’s
brawn. Both Smythe brothers developed powers of fluid density control;
with Ian having more raw power, but his older brother, Isaac, having
far better fine control. Ian entered the Academy to follow in his
brother’s footsteps and soon fell in with Laurel and Alexis,
who he harbored an unrequited crush for.
After the Academy and college, Ian chose to move
to Washington State to take a development job with Brant Industries,
becoming Laurel’s neighbor and even dating her for a time.
When Alexis came to him for help, the Academy Enforcer, Prometheus,
ended up igniting a gas main and destroying Ian’s home in
his efforts to apprehend Alexis. Both out of a need for vengeance
and a sense of duty to the captured kids, Ian proposed a raid on
the Academy’s Langley campus. The raid ended with Ian confronting
and being gravely wounded by Prometheus.
Once at Freeland House, Ian managed to start a
relationship with Alexis and seems content on staying at the House
and looking after the younger residents. He seems to have no qualms
letting his talent at engineering go to waste, but throws himself
wholeheartedly into super heroics instead.
As Chaos, Ian wields his power over the density
of fluid matter to create powerful air currents that are capable
of striking down enemies or supporting his weight while he is wearing
a special wind catching cape. He can also use his power to manipulate
other fluids, such as water, compacting them to the point of solidity
or pressurization (even in situations normally not possible), or
thinning them out to the point that they don’t provide buoyancy.
He has also recently been taught by Isaac how to use his power to
create a fuel air bomb.

Warrick
Kaine
“Alloy”
Date of Birth:
November 1, 2057 (relative age due to stasis: 18)
Race/Ethnicity: Italian American
Height: 5’6”
Weight: 123lbs.
Hair: black
Eyes: hazel
A resident of Brooklyn, New York, Warrick always dreamed of becoming
a hero like those he read about in comic books and fantasy novels.
When his psionic powers manifested in the form of metal control,
he became one in order to protect the other kids in his neighborhood
from gangs looking to avenge themselves for his actions.
As the prelate Damascus, Warrick nominated himself
as sidekick to his real life hero, The Whitecoat. After a series
of flubs, the Whitecoat finally bought Warrick’s ‘career’
to the attention of his parents, who decided that if their son wanted
to be a prelate, he would have to do it the ‘right’
way; by learning how to harness his powers at the Academy.
Unfortunately, Warrick drew the attention of the
Academy, which placed him in stasis for ‘data collection’
for over a year before he was rescued in Ian and the others’
raid on the Langley campus.
Following his rescue, Warrick quickly made friends
with Cyn and the two of them formed the first super heroic team,
called Lifesavers, Inc. Warrick flourished at Freeland House, making
more friends that he’d ever made in New York, and finding
a love interest in Christina “Tink: Carlyle. He also maintains
constant contact with his family, especially his younger sister,
Tammy.
Warrick wields the power to shape metal to his
whims, both on the physical level and at the atomic level; able
to transmute one metal into another at the cost of great damage
to surrounding metal objects. He usually uses this to create supernaturally
hard armor around him or to disarm his opponents. His ‘metal
sense’ can distinguish one metal or form of metal from another
as well as amount of stress or damage to a piece. Warrick compares
this to a second sense of taste. Magically altered metal and particulate
metal has been shown to resist his powers and muddle his metal sense.
Warrick also has the ability to ‘summon’
two metal tentacles that typically anchor themselves to his arms.
Named Isp and Osp, the tentacles are at least semi-independent beings,
capable of communicating with Warrick and keeping knowledge secret
from him. Their ‘bodies’ are formed of liquid metal
and they change their shapes to suit their tasks, from blades to
spider like legs for typing. Beyond that, Isp and Osp are also phenomenally
strong, easily able to lift and carry Warrick and another person.

Cynthia “Cyn”
McAllister
“Facsimile”
Date of Birth: December 12, 2056 (relative age
due to stasis: 17)
Race/Ethnicity: Irish American
Height: usually 5’8”
Weight: usually 178lbs.
Hair: white
Eyes: usually green (naturally purple due to albinism)
Born to an abusive family in North Carolina, Cyn faced her father
and brothers’ ire for being born an albino; something her
father insists means that she isn’t his child. Things only
became worse when her psionic ability of perfect shapeshifting and
accompanying six-fold increase in her appetite manifested. Her father
and brothers quickly discovered that even small electrical shocks
were enormously painful to her and sent her powers haywire.
Eventually, Cyn made her way to the Academy, where
she was once again abused in the form of being kidnapped and held
in stasis for two years before being rescued and bought to Freeland
House.
With a fresh slate in Mayfield, Cyn has become
close friends with Warrick and has taken Laurel as a sort of surrogate
mother after finally getting her chance to confront her family about
her treatment. She now considers the Descendants to be her family
and fears losing them more than anything. Due to her poorly adjusted
upbringing, she has had trouble dealing with her jealousy at Warrick
and Tink’s relationship and has struggled with what her feelings
actually are. Nonetheless, she is forceful and opinionated, mirroring
Alexis’s younger days as she tries to force Melissa to ‘have
fun’ her way and dragging Warrick and Juniper into everything
she does.
Cyn is a consummate shapeshifter, having complete
control over her biology. This allows her to not only mimic others,
but to form entirely new guises, grow claws, wings, or armor, and
stretch or strengthen her own limbs.
The price for this vast power is that Cyn’s
metabolism works overtime, requiring her to eat six times that of
a normal human female her size and more if she uses her power extensively.
If she ignores this need for too long, her skin will break down
and metabolize any organic material it touches. Further, her highly
efficient cellular makeup makes her extremely vulnerable to electric
shock, which causes her to lose control of her powers.

Juniper
Taylor
“Zero”
Date of Birth: December 23, 2058 (relative age
due to stasis 17)
Race/Ethnicity: English/Native American
Height: 5’4”
Weight: 132lbs
Hair: brown
Eyes: hazel
Little is known about where Juniper comes from or her life before
the Academy other than the fact that she had a class with Warrick
and was placed in stasis before he was. She was being transported
by a Project Tome cover operation when the vehicle had an accident
and freed her. Ian and Alexis rescued her from Tome’s Agents
and bought her to Freeland House.
There, Juniper did her best to ingratiate herself
with the other teens, though she is frequently made the butt of
Cyn’s jokes for her sunny disposition. Though she isn’t
particularly close to anyone else at Freeland House, she approaches
the Descendants’ activities with excitement and gusto, though
she rarely seems to take missions – even missions that directly
threaten her life – seriously. Juniper pursued and eventually
became involved with Adel Miller, whose supposed lack of personality
is also the butt of many of Cyn’s jokes.
Juniper possesses a heat sense and the ability
to lower the temperature of an area or object, causing objects to
become so cold as to turn brittle. She also uses this ability to
freeze water vapor in the air into shackles, shields, or weapons.
On at least one occasion, this power was shown capable of reducing
ambient temperature enough to freeze air.
On top of her powers, Juniper also possesses military
level skills with thrown weaponry, field surgery, and battlefield
control. Recently, she also won a Koshiki Motors Genokaze flying
motorcycle in a raffle. Whether she will use this in anything other
then a civilian capacity remains to be seen.

Kareem
Utt
“Ephemeral”
Date of Birth: March 3, 2053 (relative age due
to stasis 18)
Race/Ethnicity: Iranian American
Height: 5’9”
Weight: 149lbs
Hair: brown
Eyes: brown
Kareem was born in Iran and moved to California with his parents
when his father took a job offer as part of a team researching the
then newly discovered astral plane. When Kareem displayed astral
projection powers similar to his father’s he decided, with
his parents’ consent, to attend the Academy to make the most
of them. Unfortunately, his time at the Academy was cut short by
his kidnapping and imprisonment in a stasis cell.
Time in the cell damaged Kareem’s body and
by the time Kareem was freed from his confinement, his body had
fallen into a deep coma, leaving his astral projection as his only
method of communication. Despite this, Kareem made fast friends
at Freeland House, particularly with the depressed and reclusive
Melissa even before Laurel created a network of devices that allowed
Kareem to communicate via computer screen and speakers and travel
miles from his comatose body.
Possibly due to his unprecedented lengthy exposure
to the astral plane, Kareem has developed abilities that utilize
and manipulate the plane in some way, allowing him to shape the
local reality on the astral, to attack the astral bodies of material
creatures, and to read and touch the minds of others.
Following an encounter with astral entities, Kareem
was forced back into his body, which awoke from the coma and it
has become unclear what powers he has retained apart from his ability
to sense and read minds. As he attempts to adjust to life on the
physical plane once more, he has rather swiftly fallen into a relationship
with a protomorph girl named Desiree.

Melissa
Forrester
“Hope”
Date of Birth: March 12, 2049 (relative age due
to stasis: 17)
Race/Ethnicity: Irish American
Height: 5’3”
Weight: 110lbs.
Hair: red
Eyes: green
Melissa was sent to the Academy in hopes of controlling her ability
to exude mood enhancing stimulants, which had driven her to depression
due to never being able to trust the emotions of others. At the
Academy, she was roommate to Alexis who made constant overtures
of making her part of her circle of friends, but was always rebuffed.
In the winter of her first year at the Academy,
Melissa as kidnapped and remained in stasis for nearly a decade
before Alexis and company unexpectedly rescued her from the Langley
campus. Horrified at how much time she’d lost, Melissa fell
into her old patterns, rejecting Cyn’s attempts to make friends.
She did, however, find a kindred spirit in Kareem, who was a literally
removed from a normal life as she was spiritually.
Melissa initially looked down on super heroics
except in cases that directly affected her, but her attitude has
changed since being reunited with her family and the younger brother
she never knew and coming to understand the need to protect them.
With minimal combat ability, Melissa relies on
her mood elevating power to distract enemies while concentrating
on applying the healing touch to the fallen. Neither power is without
it’s price, however. Though Melissa now has control of her
mood power, she can only elevate existing moods, which means that
she ma actually increase an enemy’s resolve of bloodlust.
Her healing, likewise has the side effect of causing ravenous hunger
in the subject, possibly to the point of starving them to death
in the process of healing them.
