What is a webserial?
A webserial is an ongoing story published to the internet chapter
by chapter instead of all at once in the same manner as stories
used to be published in magazines and other monthly publications.
Some of these have a definite end in mind, while others are meant
to be ongoing.
Another way
you could look at webserials is that they are very much like all-text
webcomics. You can learn more about webserials by reading the
Wikipedia
entry, or browsing the Web
Original and Web
Serial Novel sections of TV Tropes.org.
What is The
Descendants?
The Descendants is a webserial written in the spirit
of Silver/Bronze Age super hero comic books. It is presented like
a comic book universe, with the main series having issues (starting
with Issue #0),
specials and annuals on a 12 issue cycle and side stories appearing
as mini series and one shot issues.
The story
takes place in the not so distant future of the 2070’s where
people called psionics are born with extraordinary powers that
often defy modern science. In order to learn to use their powers
for the good of their nation, American psionics are offered the
chance to attend the Psionics Training and Application Academy
in Langley, VA; a government funded private school for psionics.
The action
starts when three former students discover that the Academy has
a hidden agenda involving kidnapping its own students and putting
them in suspended animation. After saving three such students
and engaging one of the Academy’s Enforcers, the trio retreat
to the city of Mayfield, VA where they wonder how to deal with
the new revelations and the story truly begins.
Where do I
start?
The best place to start is obviously Issue
#0, which establishes most of the core cast and the
basic story. If you are looking for a true comic book experience
of diving into the existing continuity and learning as you go,
try Issues #13
or #25,
which are fairly good starting points.
I’ve
read the first issue – what do I read next?
The Archives
are set up to take you linearly through the main continuity, starting
with Issue #0
and going forward. But It doesn’t include the mini series
and one shots that flesh out the rest of the universe or give
insight on what’s going on in the background of series.
